Mcleodganj situated in Himachal Pradesh is one of the most popular weekend destinations for people residing in Delhi –NCR and nearby Punjab and Haryana for a temporary escape from sweltering heat of merciless summers. Mcleodganj is a suburb of Dharamshala Town in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Tourism is an important industry in Mcleodganj. Mcleodganj is also called the home of spiritual leader Dalai Lama. Best time to visit Mcleodganj is from October to June. Mcleodganj is a combination of peace and adventure.
How to reach Mcleodganj
If you want to travel by train, nearest railway station is Pathankot which is 90 kms from Mcleod ganj. Taxis, buses, cabs are easily available from Pathankot.
If your budget allows you to go by plane, nearest airport is Gaggal airport ,which is 30kms from Mcleodganj, cabs are easily available from here
If you want to travel by road, you will have to travel via Dharamshala. You can take Himachal tourism buses or taxis.
We took the option of trains as it was the most comfortable for us. From Pathankot we went to Dharamshala by the bus of Himachal tourism, and from there we hired a cab for our next two days sightseeing in Mcleodganj.
Accommodation in Mcleodganj
Since Mcleodganj is a hot tourist destination of national and international tourists, there is a range of hotel accommodations available here. Hotels can be booked online, range lies between INR 1500-6000. If you are looking for still cheaper stay, you can search for hotels after arriving here.
We booked hotel room after arriving here which was much cheaper than what we were expecting; we booked it or INR 700 a night.
What to see in Mcleodganj
Bhagsunath Temple and Bhagsu fall : Bhagsunath temple is located in lush green surroundings and provide amazing views. The temple is located at a height of 1770m above sea level and attracts a huge number of devotees throughout the year. The temple is surrounded by beautiful pools which are considered to be sacred and of healing powers.
At some distance from the temple Bhagsu fall is set amidst lush green and pristine environment which Provide excellent photography options
Namgyal Monastry : Namgyal Monastry is situated in Tsuglagkhang complex which is also considered the home of Dalai Lama. This peaceful and serene place tells a lot about Tibetan culture.
Tibetan Museum : Tibetan Museum is also situated in Tsuglagkhang complex. This museum provides an insight into Tibetan culture through various historical documents, handicrafts, pottery etc
Triund: Triund is situated at a distance of 2 Km from Mcleod Ganj. This is an ideal place for trekking. You can either opt for a full day adventure trek or come back in the evening or you can opt for camping there. Camping would be a wonderful experience, because the night view at the site is mesmerizing. The view of beautiful Kangra valley is amazing a night.
Other options are Dal lake , situated at a distance of 3 km
Church of St. Johns in wilderness, a 19th century church set amongst tic deodar trees in tranquillity
Shopping and Dining in Mcleodganj
Mcleodganj known for Tibetan handicrafts, thangkas, Tibetan carpets, different types of Buddha statues, stuff for meditation, yoga, Tibetan singing bowls , trendy cloths , stone studded jewellery etc . But if you are looking for cheap shopping, Mcleodganj is not the pace, as the rates are very high. But you can always allow your pocket to buy some stuff as souvenir. As you will be charmed by the beauty of these products. You should have very good negotiation skills for street shopping.
There are a number of restaurants available at Mcleodganj which offer foods of all varieties, but one must try the Tibetan dishes ‘Momo’s’ and ‘Thukpa’ . Though they are available in other parts of India as well but here the taste is different and amazing. Mcleodganj a great place to try authentic Tibetian food.
